following the Headmaster

Updated: Aug 21, 2024

Our driver was an hour late picking us up today. My partner teacher and I weren't too stressed about it but it did affect the plans for us once we got to the school. Still, everyone was great about being flexible and it seemed like we still did all the major items on our agenda.

We had a great time journeying with the Headmaster to the area down the street where PE took place. The students had so much stamina and energy considering the heat (although, to be fair, they thought the temperatures that I preferred were freezing. Lol.) We had a great time watching the students and discussing similarities and differences of our educational systems with him and the PE teachers through a translator (one of the older students who wants to be a translator in the future so our Host teacher gave her this opportunity to practice...and she did an amazing job!!!)

We had a blast talking with another group of students at the school. They even taught my puppet, Sunny, some words. Sunny is still behind in making her video clips for her Instagram account but she had fun interacting with the students.

In the late afternoon we headed to the other side of the city visit the Mohammed VI Museum for Water Civilization in Morocco. It was very cool--a whole museum about water, the history of water in Morocco, and the plans for conserving water, and the 2030 goals for conserving water. The King of Morocco had some great designers that made wonderful interactive exhibits. If it were near me, I'd love to have students visit it. At the time we went, we were the only people there so it was really relaxing to take time to go through the floors that had exhibits. We told everyone that we saw after our visit to the museum that they needed to go there too.

It was another early night of 8ish. I made use of the room service and it was nice to have a Morocco version of a Margherita Pizza. Still yummy but did have a slightly different taste to it.

Tidbits for future TGCers - The sun and heat are no joke. I tried to put on sunscreen but it seemed to melt or sweat right into my eyes. Perhaps if you're going somewhere hot/sunny, research sunscreens that won't irritate your eyes (or won't get into them in the first place.)

Accessibility - Standing in the heat and Sun for a long time is challenging if you have legs/back/feet issues. At a certain point, I went ahead and found a chair that I could sit on in the shade and that made it much more pleasant to have conversations. As someone who burns very easily then looks like a bloated tomato, it might not have even been on their radar that the bright Sun was not my friend. So, advocate for yourself if there is something that they might not realize is an issue.
