What a privilege to be able to take a day trip to Fes! Sure, it was a long day, but how incredible to visit a city formed in the year 789!!!
We had fun on the bus trip and was grateful for a quick stop half way for a bathroom break. Lol. Actually the visit to the convience store was fun because we got to buy some Moroccan snacks and they even sold Starbucks there too (although just the coffee stuff…not my usual drinks).
After viewing Fez from a nearby hill, we made it to the city and walked through the Medina. We learned about University of al-Qarawiyyin, the oldest college in the world, and some other interesting facts.
I was excited to see the tanneries since I had read and watched so much about them. Yes, they smelled but honestly I had prepared for much worse. Still, I was grateful for the mint that we held to our nose.
I also loved the weaver and pottery area we visited too.
Notes on accessibility- Fes is another old (really, really old) city. We took the downhill path but that still means lots of walking, some crowded paths, and random uneven pavement. The tannery we went to had narrow stairs and some steps without handrails. Once again, the kindness of the Moroccan people and fellow Fulbright’s was incredible and an arm or hand was always nearby to lend support. It’s a long day of walking and traveling. For those who use compression socks, might be a good thing to consider for the trip.
